About Borovets

Description

Borovets, known as Chamkoria until the mid 20th century, is the first mountain resort of its kind, in Bulgaria and on the entire Balkan range. Its origin dates back to 1896, when Kniaz Ferdinand – Bulgaria's monarch at the time, had his summer residence and several hunting lodges built there. His example was followed by aristocrats and members of the Bulgarian elite.

In 1942, the name of the resort was changed to Borovets – a literal translation of the Turkish word ‘Chamkoria’, meaning pine forest. In the 60s and 70s, the resort expanded to become the largest winter sports centre on the Balkans 

Gradually, in the 70s and 80s of the last century, Borovets developed into a trendy ski resort and has been a host to 2 World and 12 European cups.
